Senior Associate Private Client Solicitor

Due to our continued growth we are looking to recruit a Senior Associate Private Client Solicitor.

The role will involve working within a multi-disciplinary team including tax specialists and solicitors to advise on the full range of private client work including estate planning, Wills, lasting powers of attorney, the administration of high-value estates, trust administration and personal tax planning. Meridian is one of the largest private client teams in the Midlands, and is recognised as one of the leading firms in this area. Much of our work involves technical advice on inheritance tax, capital gains tax and income tax. We also provide highly specialised advice to individuals and trustees on international tax issues and cross border succession. Experience in these areas is desirable but full training will be given.

The successful candidate is likely to have over 5 years post qualification experience and be STEP qualified. However, we will consider applications from strong candidates with less experience, but with a desire to specialise.  We offer flexible working arrangements and will consider candidates who are looking to work part-time.

Tax Advisory Specialist

Due to growth in tax advisory work, we are looking for a tax advisory specialist to work closely with the partners on a broad range of tax advisory work for existing clients and one off projects.  This would cover all the main personal taxes.  Advisory work would include trust and estate planning, shareholder planning such as exits and reorganisations, real estate planning and a very significant element of international work around residence, domicile and overseas structures.

Trust Manager

Due to continued growth, we are looking to recruit a trust manager to join our busy Private Client Practice.

The role will involve working with a multi-disciplinary team including tax specialists and solicitors to assist in the management and compliance affairs of various trusts.

We are looking to recruit a permanent trust manager to take on a mixed portfolio of trusts.  This is primarily a compliance based role that will follow the normal tax compliance calendar and will involve managing a caseload under the supervision of the partners. The ideal candidate would have strong attention to detail, technical expertise and be able to take ownership of the role.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the annual trust accounts and tax return compliance using CCH Tax software
  • Providing written advice to trustees in relation to financial, tax and trust law positions of trusts under management under the supervision of the partners of the firm
  • Preparation of IHT Returns for 10 years charges and exit charges
  • Preparing for and attending regular trustees meetings and as necessary meetings with investment managers and other professionals
  • Acting as a point of contact for trustees, beneficiaries and intermediaries
  • Dealing with payments to beneficiaries, liaising with investment managers etc
  • Registrations under the Trust Registration Service and other related matters as necessary.

We are looking for either:

  • A candidate with mainstream accounting background; a qualified accountant (AAT/ACA/ACCA) who has subsequently been working in a trust/tax environment and therefore has experience of trust compliance
  • A candidate who is trained in trust/tax compliance and therefore has a good basic tax compliance knowledge but also has a thorough knowledge and understanding of trust accounting probably ATT/CTA or STEP qualified
  • A solicitor/legal executive or an experienced trust manager who can demonstrate knowledge and experience of trust accounting

Bookkeeper (job share)

Meridian is a specialist private client law firm based in the Midlands. A mixture of solicitors and tax specialists, we are one of the largest private client practices in the region.

The Bookkeeper maintains the Firm’s accounting records and processes receipts and outgoings for both office and client account, ensuring strict compliance with Solicitors Regulation Authority accounts rules.

Working pattern: Two days / week | 9:00am – 5:00pm | One hour lunch break | 14 hours / week

Location: Wood Rydings Court, Packington Lane, Little Packington CV7 7HN

Key Responsibilities

  • Manages the Firm’s payroll in partnership with an external accountant.
  • Prepares periodic VAT returns.
  • Handles banking transactions including receipts and payments, standing orders and direct debits.
  • Bank mandates.
  • Leads the relationship with the Firm’s chosen bank.
  • Monthly bank reconciliation.
  • Closes the books at month end and preparing a trial balance for reporting purposes.
  • Liaises with fee earners on a daily basis.
  • Ensures compliance with regulator rules including the handling of client funds.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Strong bookkeeping skills.
  • Experience of working in a law firm is desirable, but not essential.
  • A relevant accounting qualification is desirable, but not essential (qualified by experience).
  • Experience of accounting packages.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Receptionist / Secretary

An increase in demand for administrative support driven by the Firm’s continuing growth has led the Firm to look to recruit an additional full-time Receptionist / Secretary. The first point of contact for visitors to the Meridian offices, the Receptionist / Secretary welcomes clients and visitors and directs them appropriately. He / she handles incoming calls and manages the Firm’s diary commitments. The Receptionist / Secretary provides typing cover for the legal secretaries.

The successful candidate has front of house experience and telephone skills. He / she is highly proficient in typing and secretarial duties and Microsoft Office applications. Experience of working in a law firm is desirable, but not essential.

The personal qualities that are key to being successful in this role include a high degree of professionalism, client focus, attention to detail, an ability to multi-task, resilience and good organisation. This individual is also an excellent communicator.

Own transport is essential due to the location of our premises.
